Shedding Light on Dark Under Eye Circles

If you’re struggling with dark under eye circles, one of the first things you can do is stop blaming yourself.  Although most people believe that dark under-eye circles are a sure sign of lack of sleep or too much partying, the true cause of under eye circles has little to do with your behavior.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  Lack of sleep and excessive partying will not be beneficial for your appearance, and can exacerbate dark under eye circles.  But the root of the cause has more to do with the blood vessels under your eyes than your lifestyle.

Causes of Dark Under Eye Circles

Dark under eye circles appear in very much the same way that bruises appear.   Your under eye circles are sort of like bruises, they are the sign that hemoglobin has been broken down (hemoglobin is a protein-based component of red blood cells).  When hemoglobin has been broken down, the remaining components area dark blue-black color, like a bruise.

Why is the hemoglobin being broken down?  Well, this is a bit more complicated, but again, it’s not your fault.  The skin around your eyes is full of capillaries, tiny blood vessels.  Sometimes red blood cells that should be flowing through your capillaries go off track, and end up in the delicate skin around your eye.  To ‘clean up’ these wondering blood cells, our body naturally breaks them down, including the hemoglobin.  Thus we end up with that bluish-black color under our eyes.

Because the skin around the eyes is so thin and delicate, it’s easier to see what is happening underneath.

Treating Under Eye Circles

Smoking, caffeine and alcohol can make under eye circles worse. So if you’re prone to having dark circles under the eyes, avoiding these products can help you in the battle.

There are many options for masking your circles with makeup.  Some eye creams also help reduce the appearance of dark under eye circles such as Lierac Diopticerne.  I sell this product in both of my spas (ABC Day Spa in Freehold and Aquamedica Spa in Long Branch).  Diopticerne can help improve blood circulation under the eyes which can reduce the need for your body to break down stray blood vessels.

If you live in Monmouth County NJ, you can purchase this at our spas. If not, give either spa a call and we can ship the product to you.
