Different types of reflexology

Q.    Are there different types of reflexology?

A.    Yes,There are different ways of doing reflexology.  The end result is the same, so there is no right or wrong method.

UNIVERSAL REFLEXOLOGY… (Ingham Method) is the basis for the way most reflexology is practiced around the world today.  With this method, pressure is applied by “thumbwalking” in which the thumb (or finger) bends and straightens while maintaining a constant pressure across the area of the foot being worked.

ZONE REFLEXOLOGY…. predates universal reflexology.  This method uses the 5 zones in the hands and the feet.  Zones are imaginary, vertical lines that divide the body, and hence the foot and hand, into 5 sections.  Not as precise as the Universal Method.

REFLEXOLOGY AND MERIDIAN THERAPY…integrates pressure point reflexology techniques with the Meridian and Five Element Theory and practice.

VACUFLEX REFLEXOLOGYThis system combines a vacuum boot therapy with a vacuum cup treatment of the acupuncture meridians.

HOT STONES REFLEXOLOGYBased on same principles as the Universal Method.  This practice adds the use of hot and cold stones to improve blood flow to reflex points.

VERTICAL REFLEXOLOGYis a technique that focuses on working the weight-bearing dorsal reflexes (top) of the foot rather than the familiar plantar or sole reflexes.  The client is standing for the session.

METAMORHPOSIS REFLEXOLOGY….created by Robert St. John.  Work is done on the feet and spine to address the primary patterns behind the client’s discomfort and disease.  Work is done on the head to address tension in relation to thinking.  Work is done on the hands to address the ability to ‘do’ things.

RWO SHUR REFLEXOLOGY…practiced in many parts of Asia.  Uses a combination of thumb-sliding and pressure techniques incorporating the knuckles and sometimes small, wooden sticks.  The focus is on stimulation rather than relaxation.

CHI a philosophical approach which emphasizes “working with the human  being”.  Techniques are developed to sedate, stimulate, and balance the chi of the receiver, thus encouraging the body to activate its innate healing potential.

REFLEXOGNOSY..scope of practice are the legs and feet.  The reflexognosist assesses the way the client walks and through assessment determines how much stress is placed on each body cavity.  Selected massage techniques are applied including the stretching of all muscles, and concluding with a footbath.  Additional treatment may include a pedicure, foot exfoliation, mask and moisturizing.

THE FLOCCO METHOD..integrates foot, hand and ear reflexology during the same session.

GEMSTONE REFLEXOLOGY..An innovative and holistic approach that combines the healing powers of gemstones with reflexology therapy.  Based on 8 gemstone wands..agate, amethyst, fluorite, heliotrope, rock crystal, rose quartz, rutilated quartz and sodalite. Each gemstone has specific healing properties.  The energies of the crystal combine with the energies released by the pressure on the reflexology point to produce a powerful force for healing.
