How often should I get a massage? Is there anyone who shouldn’t get a massage?

Q: How often should I get a massage? Is there anyone who shouldn’t get a massage?
A: Two great questions!  You can get a massage as often as you want. There is no such thing as overdosing on massage, you could even get a massage as often as every day.  Our therapist, Paul, often likes to tell clients about Bob Hope and how he had a personal massage therapist and got a massage every day and lived until the ripe old age of 100. Most people don’t have the time for a daily massage, but many clients like to come in weekly or twice a month. While we can’t promise you’ll live to 100, we can promise you’ll feel great!

When someone has a condition that makes massage a risk it is called a “contraindication.”  Normal contraindications for massage are any communicable diseases like a cold or flu, any untreated health problems with the nervous or cardiovascular system. Some specific problems that require refraining from massage are vein thrombosis or blood clot problems that require a greenfield filter, congestive heart failure or recent (within the last two days) chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Also any skin problems that are contagious like athlete’s foot or warts are only contraindicated for the area where they occur.  Most physicians agree that massage during the first trimester of pregnancy is not a good idea.

If you’re not sure if your condition means that you can’t get a massage go ahead and call the spa, we’d be happy to discuss a treatment plan with you. Most conditions allow for either massage or reflexology so don’t be shy about speaking to us, we’re all highly trained professionals who massage clients with a wide array of conditions.
