Anti-Aging Foods That Boost Your Collagen Revealed!

We all know that part of aging means loss of collagen in our skin.  Losing collagen makes us look older because we lose volume and elasticity.  Our skin is made up mainly of collagen, which is a protein. In fact, more than 80% of our skin is made of collagen. Collagen is a structural protein found throughout our bodies that provides strength that our tissue and organs require while elastin provides the ability to stretch and recoil.

Facial fillers like Restylane and Juvederm are temporary ‘fixes’ to fill in areas of the face where collagen has been lost, resulting in a hollowed appearance and lines and wrinkles.  You can prevent or delay the need for such fillers by ensuring that your diet is packed with collagen enhancing foods.

Dark-green leafy vegetables such as kale and collard greens are another way to add collagen producing foods to your diet. They are high in vitamin C and lutein, a very powerful antioxidant, kale and collard greens help the body make collagen and use protein effectively, which can result in increased elasticity and moisture control for the skin and connective tissue. Examples of other dark-green leafy vegetables that are helpful in helping collagen production are spinach, arugula, chicory, mustard greens and Swiss chard. While not typically considered a dark-green leafy vegetable, asparagus is also helpful in building collagen. Your body requires about 10 mg of dark-green leafy vegetables each day to increase collagen production, which equates to about 4 oz. of collard greens or 2 oz. of kale.
