Age spots – they’re brown, their round, and let’s just say that they are not one of my favorite fashion accessories! So why do we get age spots and how can we get rid of age spots?!

Causes of Age Spots
Age spots, also known as brown spots, liver spots, dark spots, or sun spots, are patches of hyper pigmented skin that can show up on your face, neck, décolleté, and even your hands. The most common cause of age spots is exposure to the sun, but some of us are just predisposed to getting them.

Sun exposure increases melanin production and encourages the formation of uneven pigmentation on exposed areas of the skin. Even UV light from artificial sources like tanning salons can be a culprit in causing age spots.

How to Get Rid of Age Spots
Because age spots are superficial pigmentation blemishes on the skin, the best way to remove them is by removing the upper layers of the skin. This can be accomplished with a variety of treatments and products.

Here are a few treatment options for removing age spots. Speak to your primary skin care provider to determine which method is best for you.

Laser peels - Resurfacing the skin with a laser helps remove age spots on the skin’s upper layers. Speak to a dermatologist.

IPL or Photofacial – Light-based treatments such as Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also known as Photofacial treatment are designed to target and reduce red and brown pigment in the skin. Most experts in skin care can offer this treatment to you in their Spa.

Chemical peels – Like laser peels, chemical peels can also remove the skin’s upper layers to help fade age spots; may include treatment with a TCA peel. Some skin care experts can offer this to you in a spa setting.

Age spot creams like Retin A help exfoliate upper most layers of skin to gradually diminish brown spots.

Microdermabrasion- A series of microdermabrasion treatments which helps exfoliate the upper most layer of skin can help reduce the appearance of age spots.

Your skin care professional can review the treatment options with you to determine which level of care would best suit your needs. I have seen excellence results with chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Both are non-invasive and depending on the intensity of the peel, you can expect little down time after your treatments.
