Monmouth County Day Spa Expert Answers: How Often Should I get a Facial?

How often you should get a facial depends on many factors including your skin type, age, and environment.

The purpose of getting a facial is to rid the skin’s surface of dead skin cells and also to extract any impurities that have become embedded in your pores.  Impurities can cause acne in problematic skin and a grayish/dull appearance in otherwise normal skin.

Ridding the skin’s surface of dead skin cells is also beneficial for many skin types.  For acne skin, exfoliation helps to keep the pores clean and unclogged by consistently removing dead cells that can trap dirt within pores.  For healthy skin or aging skin, removing these dead cells reveals the healthy layer of skin below, for a radiant and glowing complexion.

Acne Skin

Acne skin needs a facial about once a month to manage impurities that become clogged in pores and to keep dead skin cells from trapping these impurities.  A deep cleansing facial works well for acne skin and involves manual extractions of impurities.

Sensitive Skin

You can go less frequently for a facial if you have sensitive skin. It will be very important, however, to maintain a healthy cleansing regimen at home to ensure that your skin receives the moisture and hydration needed.  There are products specifically for sensitive skin, cleansers, toners and moisturizers, that will work well to balance your skin’s needs in between facials.  Once every two months or even once every three months can keep your skin looking healthy.

Aging Skin:

Aging skin needs a good facial more frequently, about once a month as well. As we age, our skin turnover process slows, which means that dead skin cells hang around the surface of our skin longer, causing our skin to look unhealthy and tired.  In conjunction with a regular facial once a month, a microdermabrasion may also be recommended once every three months.  This is a deep exfoliation of the upper most layer of skin using specialized equipment.

In addition to your skin type, where you live may change how often you need a facial.  If you live in a city environment with a lot of traffic and industrial buildings, chance are your skin is exposed to more environmental pollutants, so you will need a facial more often than someone who lives in a suburban area.

The best way to determine your skin’s needs is to visit an established skin care professional and have your skin examined.  Upon looking at your skin and determining your skin type, a proper regimen will be recommended for you.
